Trades
of the Port of Livorno
from Janur to December 2002 General tendency of trades
The
port of Livorno handled traffic of 25,328,372
tonnes of cargo in 2002 – its best result
ever, over 663,419 tonnes (or 2.69%) more than
the previous year. Movements of goods on trucks
was again notably up, this time by 16,2% of tonnage,
240,211 vehicles (+8,1%) and 2,842,628 linear
metres (+18.9%). The overall performance is even
more impressive if we disregard the bulk liquid
traffic, mainly oil related products, thus obtaining
an increase in “high added value”
goods, i.e., those that generate induced activities
or other port services. Freight traffic is composed
of 64.2% offloadings and 35.8% shipments. Total
goods offloaded amounted to 16,261,051 tonnes,
a slight increase (0,38%) on 2001. Shipments amounted
to 9,067,321, an increase of 7.1%.
These
figures, as mentioned above, are, however, strongly
influenced by the discharged traffic in bulk liquids.
Discounting these, goods imported and exported
are fairly evenly balanced, an important drawing
point for shipping lines, who can load and unload
at the same time. The types of traffic as a percentage
of the total are as follows: • 36% bulk
liquids• 28% Ro-Ro traffic• 20% container
traffic• 9% break bulk traffic• 6%
bulk solids traffic. These last increased by 6.2%
while container traffic rose by +3.38%. Bulk liquids
were slightly down (-2.7%) as well as individual
items (-11.6%). Total sailings reached 8,420 –
a rise of 189 on the previos year; there were
5,044 arrivals from other Italian ports and 3,373
international calls, confirming the port’s
appeal to coastal traffic.
